David Yates To Direct (UPDATED)

According to Variety, David Yates (director of part of the Harry Potter franchise) may be set to return to the wizarding world as director of the first Fantastic Beasts installment.

Sources tell Variety that Yates, who directed several Harry Potter movies including the final “Deathly Hallows” installments, has agreed to return for the first installment of the Harry Potter spinoff trilogy “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

No deal has been made but insiders confirm both sides are in negotiations. WB had no comment on this story.

According to sources, the studio had always wanted to approach a person who was familiar with the “Harry Potter” landscape, having also gone out to Alfonso Cuaron, who helmed “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

Hopefully we’ll hear more about this in the coming weeks and have a confirmed director soon!

So far we know David Heyman (also from the Harry Potter movies) will be producing and J.K Rowling herself will be writing the screenplay.

UPDATE: This has been confirmed – David Yates is set to direct the first Fantastic Beasts movie.
